Kuvachenjedza

Kuvachenjedza (Rega kuvachenjedza kuchadoka ~ Don’t warn them until it gets dark) is the most important song for the mhondoro spirits of Diwa / Makusengwa area, where Sekuru Chawasarira and his teacher Mathias Jackson Chidavaenzi stayed until they were forced to leave in 1974 by the beginning liberation struggle.

Chawasarira says it’s his favourite song, for which he knows 6 parts “in and out”, all of which can be played together by different players. Plus one called Dimbotimbo, that is incompatible with the others, and played at the height of a mhondoro ceremony, when the spirits are talking.

Today we recorded him teaching the first versions (which Chawasarira calls “variations”).
