We spent the later afternoon in the yard, chatting, listening to Sekuru’s 19-key karimba, drinking beer, myself trying to tune the two Zonke-tuning matepes which I had commissioned a few months ago to my liking, under Sekuru’s guidance.
We quickly realised that filming a master craftsman building an instrument only goes that far – he succeeds in almost everything on the first try.
So we came up with the idea of a “mbira clinic” sessions, where he helps us apprentices to fix our problems and mistakes, as a complement to the matepe-making documentary.
