James Kamwaza

This afternoon we were honoured to have the other seasoned Hera/Matepe maker and master musician James Kanwaza visiting Sekuru’s place.

James had left Rushinga already at 3am and brought with him a couple of soundboards and some premade keys which he wanted to finish here.

So great to see all of you together and engaged in this very important work of documenting Sekuru Chawasarira’s vast knowledge and expertise of hera/matepe. That’s fantastic that Kamwaza is there too representing additional playing and building styles from Rushinga where Chawasarira first encountered this music! Hopefully this can lead to future projects of documenting repertoire and building of traditional hera in/from the Rushinga district! Hats off! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

    1. Hi Zack, thanks! We’re hoping for the same, that this one is only the first puzzle piece of documenting the matepe landscape.
